Nishnawbe Aski Nation CEAA Review Sub,mission - with Elder's 10 Point Response to EA and Legal CommentarySubmitted By: Lydia Big George Nishnawbe Aski Nation Environment Manager on behalf of NAN Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox December 23, 2016
NAN Elder response to CEEA review:
For the consultation process Elders from across NAN territory were recruited and brought together in Thunder Bay on the 30th of November for a two-day working group session to develop a response to the call for CEAA consultation.
NAN leaders reached out to each of the forty-nine communities and, in total 20+ elders were able to attend representing many communities across Northern Ontario. Many traveled a great distance from ‘remote’ communities in order to contribute to this important information gathering and sharing session. The session was opened by Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox and
NAN Environment Manager, Lydia Big George facilitated the sessions, supported by EcoStrategy staff and Dean Cromarty a well-respected translator. Translation was required and contributed to a robust discussion for those who preferred to address the group in their traditional language. Facilitators encouraged Elders to share their experiences with the environmental assessment process as it stands and in the past. The 10 NAN recommendations was a consensus-based list that the Elders believe should be the underlying principals of any EA in their Territory or communities.
NAN also provides a legal analysis in the submission.
